Quality
At Maaling, we are breeding with DanBred Landrace (LL) and DanBred Duroc (DD).
For all our products, all the way through the process of breeding, we are trying to keep the right focus. Vi are breeding for animals that give the best economy in the production of slaughtering pigs.
All the way from insemination to the sale of breeding stock, we keep focus on our goal to produce the best possible purebred animal with regard to index and exterior. This includes, continuously striving to reach as accurate breeding results as possible. Amongst other things, this means having focus on not letting environmental factors influence on our genetic selection.
To make quality means total focus from the implicated employees. This requires keen, engaged and honest employees. Therefore, we strive to always recruit employees with a high technical level, but moreover, it is important, that they have a personal wish for performing dedicated breeding.
Besides the above, we follow the rules from DanBred with regard to DNA paternity and maternity testing, F4-test*, etc. At Maaling, each year we test about 3,900 LL boars and females, as well as about 1,900 DD boars and females. The testing gives us even more security and accuracy in our breeding. Continuously, we seek to optimize management routines in order to ensure high level of progress explained by genes in the animal instead of environmental factors. The closing of the test period is performed by an impartial assistant from The Danish Agriculture and Food Council. Daily gain and lean percentage are calculated for each animal, and the assistant evaluates the exterior.
Moreover, feed conversion is calculated for each animal, based on direct registrations on siblings at the test unit Bøgildgård. The tested animals are compared with each other, on pen level as well as section level.
Genomic samples are taken of 100% of our tested animals. From this test, further valuable information on kinship is included in the index of each animal. Genomic samples are taken from 100% of our tested animals, which makes our index very reliable.
*F4 means E. coli O149-F4ab/ac. The resistance against this type of bacteria is linked to one single gene. Only boars that are resistant to F4 (genotype RR), are allowed to be used in the production of females and boars for AI.
